On Monday night at the Sinclair, Brody Dalle returned to Boston in her new signature red lipstick and with her fresh album Diploid Love. The grown-up goth punk crowd showed up ready to be blasted by sonic howls and were hosted a well-rounded set spanning Dalle’s full career. This suited me well as I never got the chance to see the Distillers in their original formation. Five of the decade-plus old tracks opened the show with a break of The Misfits “Hybrid Moments” mixed in. While it seems that every band has an ode to Misfits thrown into their mix these days—this raw, poppier-punk cover worked well.

Brody then announced it was time to “slow things down” and get into her newer material. Approving, excited cheers from the audience boosted her into it. She swayed with sultry non-chalance through her hit, “Meet the Foetus.” And while I loved seeing “Rat Race” live, I had hoped for live trumpets on stage as opposed to an overlying recording. Bouncing into a Spinerette track, she set down her guitar and all-out danced the track away, tossling her hair at fans and going as bubble-gum as the punk queen could. The night rounded off with another Distillers track and 2 more new ones. Everyone was surprised when the set ended so abruptly. The show was roughly 45 minutes and full of hooky material, but it certainly left everyone expecting an encore. This just gives us something to looks forward to next time—Brody always knows how to leave us wanting more.
